Muestra•t’s queer art route kicks off with an exhibition that focuses on the experiences and visibility of trans men
The DLRO Live room opens a new edition of the Muestra•t exhibitions with Baimenik Gabe (Without permission), a proposal by Nicaraguan artist Jorge Sevilla that places trans men at the center and claims the right to exist, show themselves and occupy spaces without the need for external approval or validation.
The exhibition presents a series of bodies and stories that do not seek to respond to expectations or conform to pre-established models. Through an intimate and direct look, Jorge Sevilla constructs an artistic proposal that questions the absences and silences that have historically surrounded trans people, especially trans men, a group that for years has remained scarcely represented and made visible in cultural and social spaces.
Baimenik Gabe was born precisely from that need to occupy a place of its own and generate new narratives. The exhibition proposes a human and honest approach to identities and experiences that have had to face social barriers, prejudices and situations of discrimination that still persist. Rather than offering closed answers, the exhibition proposes a space for meeting and reflection on identity, recognition and the freedom to be.
For Jorge Sevilla, art has been a tool for expression and a personal refuge since childhood. The artist, born in Nicaragua, has developed a creative practice linked to the need to represent rarely visible realities and generate spaces from which to look at other experiences. In Baimenik Gabe, that look becomes a brave proposal that seeks to give prominence to a group that continues to demand visibility and recognition.
The exhibition can be visited in the DLRO Live room until June 5.
Baimenik Gabe is part of the official programme of Muestra•t, the cultural festival of MADO Madrid Orgullo, which this year celebrates its 20th edition consolidated as one of the great meeting spaces for culture, diversity and the different forms of artistic creation linked to the LGTBI+ collective.
