In Hidden Pulses, Gema Álvarez explores the most intimate and hidden layers of the self, those that we build to protect ourselves from the gaze of others. Through her works, she unfolds visual narratives about fear, desire and the visceral need for refuge.
In Tragonas, gluttony becomes an overwhelming force that possesses two girls, devoured by an excessive craving for glucose. A metaphor of addictions and hidden drives that we would prefer to keep veiled.
In Perrillas, tenderness coexists with criticism, addressing animal abuse and reflecting on the mask as an identity assumed to survive in a hostile world.
Finally, in Juanas Cautivas, women veiled behind intricate branches represent the longing for anonymity, the search for safe spaces where vulnerability can be sheltered, with the branches as a symbol of the barriers we raise in the face of judgment.
Through a visual language charged with symbolism and delicacy, Álvarez invites us to look inward, to confront those fragile zones that we all share.
Pulsos Ocultos is part of muestra-t, the cultural agenda of MADO Madrid Orgullo, a space that celebrates diversity through art and culture.
